*please note: we do not include feeding instructions on the packaging or include a scoop in the bag or tub. This is due to the consistency of straight herbs eg roots are more dense than leaves or flowers, and they can be given to a variety of species. For further research on using straight herbs for animals there are some good books available including Hilary Self's "A Modern Horse Herbal".

Slippery Elm contains a substance called mucilage, which is a polysaccharide that becomes a gel when mixed with water. The mucilage comes from the inner bark of the tree and is a bit slippery and slimy, hence the name “Slippery Elm”. Slippery Elm Powder makes an excellent poultice, because of its 'drawing' properties and can be used topically as a safe and effective natural compress or poultice for animals. Just add warm water to turn it into a slimy soothing paste.

I needed to find something to help ease the passage of food through my horse’s digestive system. Slippery Elm has done the trick - he is much more comfortable and his droppings come through easily. Thank you again Hilton Herbs!

I use slippery elm myself and have felt the benefit. Some years ago I used it on my old gelding to increase his appetite. He had lost a lot of weight very quickly. He did not care for the food he needed to eat as he loved cow beet, not horse. . He would starve himself in the hope he would get taken off high fibre foods, I could not do that because of he was prone to laminitis. After starting him on slippery elm he started to eat again. It is great stuff. Also, have given it to an old dog with gut problems and had good results

I used this product routinely on my old ponies, both of whom have sensitive stomachs and digestions in their later years. This product helped immensely and made them significantly more comfortable. Their droppings became much firmer and less liquid like very quickly. Improving their digestion also made them look much healthier generally. It succeeded where other more expensive products failed!
